Portavogie Coastal Rowing Club

Portavogie Coastal Rowing Club is a vibrant community-based rowing club located in the fishing village of Portavogie, on the eastern shores of the Ards Peninsula. Rooted in the area’s rich maritime heritage, the club brings together people of all ages and abilities to celebrate teamwork, fitness, and a shared love of the sea.

Rowing from the beach adjacent to the busy and historic Portavogie Harbour, the club is part of the growing coastal rowing movement across Ireland and Scotland, using traditional St Ayles Skiff boats. Training sessions and regattas provide members with opportunities to develop skills, build confidence on the water, and compete in a supportive and inclusive environment.

More than just a sports club, Portavogie Coastal Rowing Club plays an active role in the local community — promoting wellbeing, preserving maritime traditions, and creating strong social connections both on and off the water. Whether members join for competition, recreation, or camaraderie, the club offers a welcoming space where community spirit and coastal heritage come together.

Roon Roak

Our boat is a St. Ayles Skiff named Roon Roak, built by the club members and friends between 2016 and 2017, the club itself having been formed in 2016.

The St. Ayles Skiff is a 4 oared rowing boat, designed by Iain Oughtred and inspired by the traditional Fair Isle skiff. The boat’s hull and frames are built using clinker plywood, it measures 22’ with a beam of 5’ 8” and weighs around 180kg. The boat holds four rowers (each with one oar/sweep) and a coxswain and is a stable and seaworthy boat.

Have a Go!

We are a friendly and inclusive club and welcome new members from all parts of the community. If you’ve ever thought of coastal rowing but are unsure whether it’s for you, why not come and give it a go? Keep an eye on our Facebook page – this is where we post details about our next row – and just turn up at the Anchor car park in Portavogie. It’s as simple as that. We offer three free rows to everyone. You should wear shoes which you don’t mind getting wet (they WILL get wet!), wear sports gloves and dress appropriately for the weather conditions. We supply all the safety equipment. You do not need to have any previous experience of coastal rowing.

Portavogie Coastal Rowing Club is affiliated to the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation Ltd  through membership of Down Coastal Rowing Association and carries insurance.
